The quarry is part of the geological trail from Soudley
The snow and the birch are evident
Shakemantle Quarry
Grid Ref SO652112
This was the first time we had visited this site and it was a magnificent sight. The snow from last week was still hanging around and, unfortunately, a blizzard arrived during the afternoon which put an end to our activities but we had worked quite well up to then. The quarry clearing consisted of scraggy birch which we wanted to remove as this would provide an open basking area for adders and lizards.

The team will have to re-visit this site to continue removing the birch and, no, we will not be mountain climbing up the sides!
